I want to put down laminate flooring in my sister's house. How do I decide what direction it goes? I've seen "point at the light", and parallel the long wall. But which is best? I've got both situations in her older house, and weird shaped rooms.

If there is no big light source place it on the longest wall for a nice look

With laminate it usually comes down to what you like best,I usually ask my customers what they want ,makes them feel important and it is their home.Yes sometimes it is easier one way or another, veiw points from one person to another differ always, sunlight shining on it ,a big long run looks like a bowling alley to some to others it makes their house bigger .My motto is whatever makes the customer happy, unless it is hardwood ,the manufacture recomends crossing floor joists,or they void your warranty.Or unless somebody else will assume responsibility.Angel

personally I like to go the longest way i can because i find that shorter rows tend to slide back and forth

On short rows like hallways , i Tend to put a little drop of laminate glue throughout the short distance, and then the whole floor section moves together for contraction and expansion
