I don't know why anyone would just rent one... They pay for themselves in no time! And basically you're LOOSING $$$$$ if you don't have one!

Installing a laminate floor for yourself. Should one rent a shear or buy an EZ shear? Most places renting a Magnum Shear rent it for between $30-$40 in the USA. So if you're gonna milk your install job and take 10 days to do it than you may want to consider just buying a shear since they're under $300 MSRP.

I myself just installed 600 sqft of laminate this weekend and although I am not a professional I have assisted in teaching several installation clinics with several manufacturers technical trainers so I know many of the tricks in doing the floor right. Not to mention I was using a Magnum Shear which cut a HUGE amount out of the installation time. That being said it still took me around 20 hours to move all the furniture, tear out the carpet, prep the floor (correctly) and install the laminate (poorly). And I still have to put the rest of my baseboard back. I'd be interested in hearing how long it takes other DIY peeps to install their floors.
